San Sebastián Tamborrada — The Longest Night of the Year

24 hours that define a city

The Tamborrada is San Sebastián's most eagerly awaited festival. Every 20 January, from midnight to midnight the following night, hundreds of drum and barrel companies fill the city streets with an unforgettable festive thunder.

How the day unfolds

  1. 00:00 — Flag-raising at Plaza de la Constitución: the mayor raises the ikurriña and the official Tamborrada begins with the Sociedad Gastronómica La Unión
  2. 00:00 to 10:00: adult companies, dressed as cooks and Napoleonic soldiers, parade through the Old Town
  3. 10:00 to 18:00: children's Tamborrada — Donostia school pupils take to the streets
  4. 18:00 to 24:00: adult companies return for the festive closing

The music that never changes

The Tamborrada march by maestro Raimundo Sarriegui plays non-stop for 24 hours. Composed in the 19th century, it is recognisable to any Donostian from the first bars. The combined rhythm of drums and barrels creates a percussive polyphony unique in the world.

How to participate

Anyone can join the parade by following any company. No costume or instrument is needed. Just follow the rhythm and let yourself be carried by the energy of one of Europe's most singular festivals.
