Pintxos route through the Old Town: the updated map of essential bars
We update the Old Town pintxos bar map with the season's news: new openings, menu changes and the classics that never fail for a Donostia txikiteo.
The txikiteo: Donostia's art of eating standing up and happy
The txikiteo is the Donostia way to spend an afternoon: moving from bar to bar through the Old Town over pintxos and txikito wine, stopping at each counter for no more than 20 minutes. A social ritual that defines Donostia's identity.
The three streets of the perfect txikiteo
- Calle Fermín Calbetón — the densest in quality bars, essential as a starting point
- Calle 31 de Agosto — mix of classics and new openings with views of Santa María church
- Calle Mayor — the historic venues that have been in the same spot for decades
The classics that never fail
- Bar Txepetxa — Cantabrian anchovies in 30 different combinations, since 1968
- La Cuchara de San Telmo — daily chalkboard of hot new Basque cuisine pintxos, no reservations
- Borda Berri — mushroom risotto and glazed ox cheek that define the new Donostia counter
- Bar Zeruko — creative pintxos with smoke, foams and avant-garde techniques at counter prices
This season's new openings
Five new openings refresh the scene: one specialising in Cantabrian tinned fish, another in seasonal game pintxos and the reopening of a historic venue under a new owner with a renewed offer. The downloadable map is available on the ExploraDonostia app.
